Sasan Gir Forest is today the only place in the world outside Africa, where the lion can be seen in his natural habitat. The forest also harbours a variety of smaller animals and birds. Other predators are the Panther and the Hyena. The Indian Deer, Sambar, Chital (spotted deer), Nilgai (blue bull), Chinkara and the Chowsingha (four horned antelope) are found here, alongwith the bear and the long tailed langur.
The Sanctuary is open to visitors from Mid October to Mid June, While during monsoon months the Sanctuary remains closed.Permission to visit the sanctuary is given by Forest Department, Sasangir on arrival. Nearby the Girnar forest is the Gir National Park. One can definitely include Gir forest in the itinerary while visiting Girnar Hills. This national park is a reserve forest and a wild life sanctuary which is the only home of Asiatic Lions and is recognized as one of the most important reserve forests of Asia due to the important species that are protected over here.
The Eco-system here is quite diverse and is nourished by the ever flowing seven rivers- Hiran, Shetrunji, Datardi, Shingoda, Machhundri, Godavari and Raval. Various animals like the Asiatic lions, Jungle cats, Indian Leopards, Sloth bears, Striped Hyenas, Ratels, Indian Cobras, Golden Jackals, Indian Palm Civets, Indian Mongoose and cats like the Desert cats and Rusty-spotted cats are found in this forest. Rare reptiles like the Monitor Lizards, Marsh Crocodiles, Indian Star Tortoise are also to be seen. Special rehabilitation programme for breeding and nurturing Asiatic Lions are undertaken in Gir.
Talala-Bhimdeval Sun Temple
Talala, 75 km from Junagadh, is famous for two things: the Bhimdeval Sun Temple and its huge orchards of kesar mangoes. If you are around in the summertime during the mango season, be sure to go visit the orchards and get your face all sticky from eating just far too many of these deliciously sweet fruits. Then be sure to wipe your face before visiting the cathedral-like Bhimdeval Sun Temple nearby, whose spire you can climb to the top for an excellent view of the surrounding area.
Kankai Mata Temple
In the heart of the jungle, 50 km from Sasan Gir, there is a shrine to Kankai Mata, the benefactor of the shepherds of Gir forest. A supremely wild place, here you can hear lions roar at night and animals gathering at the nearby lake. There is a bus from Junagadh every morning that leaves at 8am, stays one hour at the temple, and departs on the return journey at 9:45am. But to really experience the place, go with private transport and stay the night. The high temple walls ensure your safety, and once night falls, you can watch the stars through the jungle treetops, hear lions roaming outside and experience a night in the true wilderness.

Nearest airport Keshod and Rajkot is connected with Bombay .
By Rail
Sasan is the railway station, on the meter-guage line. However, the most convenient railhead is Junagadh (65 kms).
